Over the thousand years it has seen many historic moments. The abbey was rebuilt by Edward the Confessor in 1065,but the structure that we see today was begun in Gothic style by Henry 111 in 1245. It is steeped in pomp and ceremonies since William the Conqueror was crowned king of England in 1066 after the battle of Hastings.
