Should you ever visit our capital city London(UK),then one of the great historical sites that is well worth a visit is Westminster Abbey in the borough of Westminster. The abbey is well known to millions all over the world through the televised coverages of many royal weddings and ceremonial state functions. It will come as a surprise to many that it is considered to be a working church operating from a superb piece architecture erected one thousand years ago, intially as a Benedictine Monastery. Over the thousand years it has seen many historic moments. The abbey was rebuilt by Edward the Confessor in 1065,but the structure that we see today was begun in Gothic style by Henry 111 in 1245. It is steeped in pomp and ceremonies since William the Conqueror was crowned king of England in 1066 after the battle of Hastings. Coming to the present day the abbey has been used for innumerable royal and state functions ranging from christenings, opening of parliament, royal weddings and funerals even.

There are many things that set the abbey apart from other religious structures. It is one of most preserved Gothic sites in its own right-because of its affluent links with the British royal family through the ages. The abbey is the resting place of many monarchs-the tombs and memorials represent the most singular and highly revered collection of monumental sculptures in the UK.
The highlight of the visit would be to see where Edward the Confessor’s body was sanctified-the shrine is still the most significant part of the abbey.
